Software developers take on Three Peaks Challenge

The First Steps of 23 Miles in 24 Hours

What started with a passing comment has turned into an actual event. Yes, Clever Software Group is going to be doing the Three Peaks Challenge!

With the aim of undertaking the 24-hour challenge in 2022, a few members of the Clever Software Group team took part in their first training session last weekend. A software developer, head of operations and digital marketing executive go on a walk… There’s a joke in there somewhere.

The First Training Session

Gemma, James, Megan and honorary furry companion Noodle ventured out into the rain on the morning of Saturday 21st August, armed with umbrellas and coffee, to undergo their first Three Peaks training walk. Meeting in Blandford, the group from the bespoke software development company walked a loop of the North Dorset countryside. Making their way across the beautiful grounds of Bryanston School, followed by walking through the chocolate box village of Durweston, the group finished the training session by ambling along the historic North Dorset Trailway Network, finishing back where they started.

Luckily the rain eased throughout the walk and the Clever Software Group team wracked up 6.5 miles along the way. Although a gentle start, it was a good way for the Three Peaks challengers to kick off their hiking journey.

The team will eventually have to tackle Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, the three highest mountains in the UK, covering 23 miles in 24 hours. This will be no small task, but with the right training plan, it will be a piece of cake (… right?!)

Fundraising for an Incredible Cause

Whilst training and preparing for the Three Peaks Challenge, Clever Software Group will also be fundraising for Hampshire-based charity, Tall Ships Youth Trust.

Founded in 1956, Tall Ships Youth Trust is the UK’s oldest and largest sail training charity. Over its rich 65-year history, the charity has clocked up over two million nautical miles and has taken a staggering 117,000+ trainees to sea. Tall Ships Youth Trust dedicates itself to enabling young people, between the ages of 12 to 25, to fulfil their life potential through adventures at sea.

The sail training charity has a fleet of 5 vessels, including four 72ft Challenger Yachts and a 55ft Ketch. Tall Ships Youth Trust is powered by a flotilla of an incredible body of staff within its head office, sailing staff when not on land and an astounding amount of volunteers, who dedicate countless hours to supporting the charity’s extraordinary efforts.

It will be an absolute honor to fundraise for Tall Ships Youth Trust throughout the duration of the Three Peaks Challenge, not only because it is set within Clever Software Group’s home county, but also to support the vital youth development the charity carries out. So many young people have been affected by the monumental impact of the Covid-19 pandemic; now more than ever, Tall Ships Youth Trust is needed to allow so many young people the opportunity to regain and redefine their ‘new normal’.

The Second Training Session

On Sunday 19th September, our Three Peaks Challenge team ventured out again into the the beautiful Dorset countryside, to complete their second Three Peaks training walk.

Blessed with glorious sunshine and breathtaking views of the Jurrassic Coast, the team had no issue completing a cool 8 mile circuit route, starting in Worth Matravers and looping round to Chapman's Pool, finishing off at The Square and Compass for a refreshing beverage and pasty. It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday; the team has expanded, with Leigh and Luke (The Second) now joining the ranks. If you are familiar with this particular stretch of coastline, you will know there are some very daughting inclines and ascents - These most definitely put the team through their paces, gearing us up for what we have to face during the Three Peaks Challenge.

8 miles is just shy of the total amount of miles it will take to climb and descent Ben Nevis, so it was good to get a rough idea of what we will be undertaking. Unfortunately, we don't think there will be a Coastguard Watch Station offering tea and cake half way up Ben Nevis, like there was at St Aldhelm’s Head on Sunday. Guess that means we'll just have to take our own!

What Next?

Clever Software Group’s Three Peaks Challenge may be over 8 months away yet, but the team has embarked on a very exciting journey.
